Day 4: Installing WordPress on a Web Server

Introduction:

Welcome to Day 4 of our 30-day WordPress Web design course! Today, we’ll cover the steps to install WordPress on a web server, which will allow your website to be accessible to anyone on the Internet.

Step 1: Prepare Your Hosting Account

Before we begin, make sure you have the following:

  • A registered domain name.
  • A hosting account with a provider (e.g., Bluehost, SiteGround).
  • FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client software (e.g., FileZilla) to upload files to your server.

Step 2: Download WordPress

1. Visit the WordPress website:

Go to the WordPress.org website (https://wordpress.org/) and download the latest version of WordPress.

2. Extract the WordPress files:

Extract the downloaded WordPress ZIP file to a folder on your computer.

Step 3: Upload WordPress Files to Your Server

1. Connect to your server using FTP:

  • Open your FTP client software (e.g., FileZilla).
  • Enter your FTP credentials provided by your hosting provider (hostname, username, password, port).
  • Connect to your server.

2. Upload WordPress files:

  • Navigate to the root directory of your hosting account (usually `public_html` or `www`).
  • Upload the extracted WordPress files to the root directory.

Step 4: Create a Database

1. Access your hosting control panel:

Log in to your hosting account’s control panel (e.g., cPanel, Plesk).

2. Create a new database:

  • In the control panel, find the database section (e.g., MySQL Databases).
  • Create a new database and make note of the database name.

3. Create a database user:

  • Create a new database user and assign a password.
  • Assign the user to the database with all privileges.

Step 5: Configure WordPress

1. Open the WordPress installation wizard:

  • In your web browser, go to `http://yourdomain.com` (replace “yourdomain.com” with your actual domain name).
  • This will open the WordPress installation wizard.

2. Enter the database details:

  • Database Name: Enter the name of the database you created.
  • Username: Enter the database user’s username.
  • Password: Enter the database user’s password.
  • Database Host: Usually, this is `localhost`, but check with your hosting provider if unsure.
  • Table Prefix: You can leave this as `wp_` or change it for added security.

3. Run the installation:

Click “Submit” and then “Run the installation.”

4. Set up your WordPress site:

  • Enter your site information, including the site title, username, password, and email address.
  • Click “Install WordPress.”

5. Log in to your WordPress dashboard:

Once the installation is complete, log in to your WordPress dashboard using the credentials you provided.

Conclusion:

Congratulations! You’ve successfully installed WordPress on your web server. Your website is now live and accessible to users around the world. Tomorrow, we’ll cover basic WordPress configuration to get your site up and running smoothly. Stay tuned!
